Need A New Mantra? Try "Hope Is Not A Strategy"

Running a small business is extremely difficult. It takes a lot of time, money, and energy to be successful and grow into the business you want it to become. It's easy to get bogged down by the day to day. In that routine, it’s tempting to just hold your breath, wait, and hope things will change.

Sometimes opportunities will come knocking and you ask that opportunity to reach back out in 3 months when things are “better.” But if you say that a few times in the same year, it's clear that time isn't healing those wounds.

Waiting for things to turn around and hoping that your days will become less busy isn't realistic.

Zoom out and ask yourself: why that would be true? Why will things be different in 6, 12, or 18 months? Chances are, they likely won’t be.

When you find yourself kicking the can on an initiative, reevaluate if it's a priority. If it's not, kill it and move on. But if it is, diagnose what’s holding you back. Do you need an intern or a virtual assistant? Or do you just need to say “yes” and go for it? Take the time to examine what you think is best for you and your company.

If you don't change your behavior, nothing will be different and your business won't evolve, no matter how much you want it to. Hope alone is not a strategy.
